Eco Centre Update!
In November 2013 we cut back our willow classroom and used the off-cuttings to build this beautiful wig-wam. Not only have we recycled our willow, but also created an aesthetically pleasing place from which visitors can view our grounds.
Energy News
In 2013, the centre reduced electricity consumption by 2.5% and reduced water consumption by
2% compared to 2012. Unfortunately our gas consumption has increased by 6.5%. This year, a new
biomass boiler will be installed; which will help us to meet targets to reduce energy consumption this year.
New Biomass Boiler
The foundations
for the new biomass boiler have been dug. Once installed, it will be powered by
wood pellets which will efficiently provide heating for the house. We have chosen to use wood pellets for
their environmental benefits. Wood pellets release smaller amounts of harmful
emissions into the environment than other fuels. The carbon dioxide that is
released when the pellets are burned is easily absorbed by growing plants, so
doesn’t add to global warming. Wood
pellets are a highly effective source of energy; only 1/3 of the volume of wood
pellets’ compared to wood chips are required for fuel in the biomass boiler. This
means that fewer pellets are needed to power the boiler; so fewer are transported,
reducing carbon emissions from transportation.
